Kjære brødre og søstre! 

Da jeg holder på å forberede meg til det kommende seminaret i Chiangmai, har jeg besluttet å sende dette bønnebrevet tidligere slik at jeg ikke glemmer det underveis i kursene som er svært intense.

 

1)    Den 22. august til 4. september vil to grupper fra Singapore og Taiwan komme for å ha musikksommerleir for studentene våre. Be om at studentene må få lære ferdigheter på musikkinstrumenter og samtidig få del i en indre vekst og styrke.

2)    Vær god å be for 40 nye studenter, 34 av dem er første års studenter og resten studerer andre og tredje år. Vi kommer til å intervjue hver student. Be at de kan få en god start på studieåret.

3)    Vær god å be for Hunankirken, mange kirkeledere vet ikke hvordan de skal lede en kirke eller gi nok omsorg til de troende. De er så overraskende uvitende på det åndelige området. De er kirkeledere fra landsbygda. Be at Gud vil gjøre nye under i våre kirker slik at barn og unge mennesker står opp og søker Guds rike. Vær også med og be om at HBI sitt nye studiested kan tilføre muligheter og fornye kirkeledere i Hunan.

Takk for din trofaste bønnevakt for HBI og kirkene i Hunan. Her er fortsatt et hardt land, vær med oss slik at vi sammen kan søke Gud og se hans allmektige gjerninger. Vi vil se mer til Jesus i dette landet

Taohualun Church har skiftet navn til Yingfengqiao kirke eller rettere sagt 迎丰桥教会

Hei venner – "Ja vi elsker Kina"

Et av Det Norske Misjonsselskaps (NMS) sine gamle hjertebarn – Taohualun kirke – (revet for mange år siden) har skiftet navn til Yingfengqiao kirke. 迎丰桥教会

Grunnen er at den nyreiste kirken – ferdig i fjor ligger i Yingfengqiao district av Yiyang by – Hunan.

Taohualun adressen er dermed ikke lenger veldig meningsfull.

 

Po Chu og jeg skal dit den 7/8 2011 og være med på den offisielle dedikasjonen av kirken og vil komme med en hilsen fra NMS.

Prayer letter for August 2011

 

As I am preparing for the coming August 1-14 study in Chiangmai, I think I should send this prayer letter ealier, lest I forget it when the courses are so intensive.

 

1)        August 22-September 4, two groups of muscians from Singapore and Taiwan will come to have Music Summer Camp for our students. Pray that students can learn music instuments skills and have inner growth.

2)        Please pray for 40 new students, 34 of them are in the first year and others are in second or third year. We will have interview with every student. Pray that they can have a good start.

3)       Please pray for Hunan church, many church leaders don’t know how to pastor a church, or how to give enough care to believers. They are just superisingly ignorant on spiritual things. They are rural church leaders and city church leaders. Please pray that God will do new things among our churches that children and young people will rise to seek God’s kingdom. Please also pray that HBI new campus can supply opportunities of renewing Hunan church leaders.

 

Thank you for your commitment in praying for HBI and churches in Hunan! Here is still a hard land, be with us to look upon God for His almighty deeds. We want to see more Jesus on this land.

Dear brothers and sisters,

 

My son was sick (caught a cold and had fever) for a week. He only recovered. Just now I suddenly remember that I have you at my side and together we have ministries in Hunan province; I need to write to you asking for prayers, my dear co-workers in Christ.

 

1)        June 18-19, Gloria will bring 5 students to Lilin church of Zhuzhou. It is a new style church, they started the church from cell group like model. They attracted many young people in that city. We are going to help them do a worship with music instruments on Saturday night, hope to encourage their young people to take up worship ministry, learning to use instruments. We also help them do the Sunday service, leading worship and preach. Please pray for us.

2)        Students of our school are divided into groups, around 12 students a group. Every week each group is led by a teacher to fellowship. Please pray that this fellowship time can be a family time for each student, that they can grow to mature in love.

3)       Some graduate students are facing an uncertain future. They don't know if they will serve in church or find a job, since many rural churches can't afford church worker's salary. Please pray for their future and the situation of our rural churches----they need full time worker, but can't afford.

4)       Gloria finished her two final papers, Mission History received 93, grade A; Social Anthropology's grade hasn't come out. She will go to Chiangmai and study there from August 1 to 12, the two courses she will take are: Leadership Development and Mission Theology. There are all together 8 required books to read, 10 short papers to write, two final papers and one course project. Please pray that she can use her time well and fulfill all these requirements.

5)       Gloria will teach 4 courses next semester from September to next January: the book of Jeremiah, Old Testament Survey, Thesis Writing and Against Heresies. Among these courses, she teaches OT Survey for the first time, and other courses she has taught three times. Please pray that she can use her time wisely!

6)       Gloria wants to send her son to a Christian run kindergarten in Changsha. It is named Appletree. It is invested by foreigners. They charge a lot of money----each month charges higher than Gloria's salary. It is a dream of Gloria to put her son in it to receive better education with love from above. Please pray for Gloria's dream can come true.

7)       Hunan Christian Council team has come back from Taiwan. We received best treatment from Banqiao Church and learned a lot from them on cell group model. Now we are working on One to One Accompanying Study materials. Please pray, so that the process can be sped up. We have to get two government departments' approval for printing these materials out, and it usually can cost two months! But with your prayers, we want to get it through in two weeks.

8)       Youxian church, Lilin church and Qingshuitang church in zhuzhou area, Chenzhou church and HBI church are going to transfer to cell group model gradually. Please pray for these churches' leadership and for suitable materials keep coming out for use.

9)       HBI New Campus construction is still in the process of getting different government departments' approval. We hope to get all needed process done within the coming two months.

As you have noticed, this prayer letter is mainly personal based. The content is most for Gloria and those persons and things that Gloria thinks important, but all related to HBI.

 

1)        May 13 and 16, I am going to hand in two final papers for two courses. I need your prayers.

 

2)        Hunan Christian Council sent a group to Taiwan Lutheran Church to learn how to do cell group church from April 26 to May 2. Pastors in this group who are from HBI church, Liling church, Chenzhou church, Qingshuitang church and Youxian church are going to do cell group church after go back. Please pray for them.

 

 

3)       Third year students are going to finish their graduation papers by the end of May. Please pray for them. They have worked on it for about a year.

 

4)       Ms. He Xiaoyun, our music teacher, she has come back to work, thank God!

 

5)       For our third year students, they are writing their graduation paper. This is a big challenge for them.

 

 

6)       We have 8 teachers in their degree study and 7 teachers teaching in school. Please pray teachers who are teaching for they are heavy loaded and for teachers who are studying for they can serve Hunan church better after they come back continuing teaching in HBI.

 

7)       We have to finish our partnership with our American partners for some reason. Please pray for this.

En familie i Fastlandskina som trenger vår forbønn

Sist uke reise jeg for Det Norske Misjonsselskap i Kina. Der traff jeg en mor som hadde en 16 år gammel sønn. Sønnen var døv, nesten stum og blind samt hadde mentale problemer. Det eneste jeg kunne gjøre var å be for henne. Følte meg totalt hjelpeløs.

 

Vet ikke om det finnes en institusjon i denne verden som kan hjelpe denne tenåringen. – Og enda mindre sannsynlig er det at finnes i slik hjelp i Kina.

Vær gjerne med å be for denne familien og sønnen som må ha det svært vanskelig og være svært ensom.

Noen betrakninger fra Shanghai en fredagskveld i April 2011

Shanghai betraktninger en fredags kveld

 

I dag har Tom og jeg vært på besøk hos China Christian Council/ Tre Selv. (CCC) Så dro Tom tilbake til Hong Kong jeg ble igjen for å besøke venner, gå på gudstjeneste, ta bilder og generelt slappe av. 

 

CCC var åpen for det meste. Teologisk lærer i Nanjing jo det hørtes interessant ut, utveksling av yngre kristne absolutt en mulighet, diakoniprosjekt i en provins - la oss begynne planleggingen ..... 

 

Kinas kirke vokser og døra til samarbeide står absolutt åpen - tanken om en kinesisk misjonær i Norge ingen umulighet..... 

 

Men Shanghai anno april 2011 har også andre sider. Gikk nedover Nanjing Street, en lang handle gågate og det som regnes for "downtown" Shanghai. 

 

I løpet av 20 minutter fikk jeg minst ti tilbud fra unge prostituerte som sikkert så en mulighet i denne enslige mannen i 50 årene. Minnet meg sterkt om den gangen jeg alene noen timer i Pattaya Thailand. 

 

Det meste var ellers også til salgs. Kopi klokker populært for ikke snakke om massasje - sikkert med noe attåt. 

 

Nokså trist egentlig

 

De fleste av de prostiterte bare ignorerte jeg men en spesielt påtrengende ba jeg tilslutt "Get lost" 

Hun gav tilsvar og sa "You rubbish" Øynene hennes skjøt lyn mot meg. 

 

Jeg merket at jeg ble såret og sint, mens syntes jo egentlig etter hvert som jeg fikk tenkt meg om, og fjernet et meg fra henne, at det var rart at jeg i det hele tatt brydde meg. Ble hun såret? Følte hun seg fordømt av meg? Eller var det rett å slett bare en profesjonell reaksjon for å fange meg inn? 

 

Neste gang jeg blir tilsnakket av tilsvarende damer velger jeg nok total ignorering. Enklest.

1)        April 26-May 2, we finally confirmed this visiting dates. We will go to visit Taiwan Lutheran Church to learn how to do cell group church from them during this period. Pray for we can learn from each other.

2)        April 19-25, there will be a group of 8 people from the U.S. visiting HBI and some churches. Pray for safe trip and good communication between us.

3)       For Ms. He Xiaoyun, our music teacher, she has been sick for two weeks.

4)       For our third year students, they are writing their graduation paper. This is a big challenge for them.

5)       For our computer class, since the present computer teacher is going to leave after this semester. Students need a good new computer teacher. Most of our students are from rural area, to learn computer is such a big thing for them.

6)       We have 8 teachers in their degree study and 7 teachers teaching in school. Please pray teachers who are teaching for they are heavy loaded and for teachers who are studying for they can serve Hunan church better after they come back continuing teaching in HBI.

7)       Yuxuan Church of HBI is going to do cell group, please pray for wisdom from God to us.

8)       Please pray for those 6 students who are from Ture Jesus churches in first year class. They are much elder than other students. They are slow and hard to keep up with the class. We are considering if persaude them to leave after this semester is over.

9)       Gloria is doing Mini Bible College ministry on translation, publishing and distribution. Please pray for this ministry. Gloria has to finish two final papers before May 13, please pray for she can make it.

Dear brothers and sisters,

As you have noticted, this prayer letter is mainly personal based. The content is most for Gloria and those persons and things that Gloria thinks important, but all related to HBI.

1) March 7-8, Gloria is going to Changde to meet 15 HBI graduates in their 6 days retreat. They have been serving in churches in Changde prefecture after graduation and they have not been ordained. Pray that through games, discussion and teaching, they can know themselves better, communicate better and have clearer vision for their future service. Kenny Sou, a Singapore pastor will also share messages with them for three days. Pray this retreat can be a great encouraging point in their life of serving God.

2) Students have come back school. Pray for them to have a meaningful semester. Pray every day they will grow toward mature in school.

3) Because of the Spring Festival holidays, our visit to Taiwan for study cell group will be delayed to March 14-20. Four teachers from HBI will join this trip. We are Gloria, Mr. Xiayi, Ms. He Xiaoyun and Rev. Wen Shuangcheng. We will go together with other 4 pastors from local churches and 1 Religious Affairs Bureau official. Pray for the procedures will go smoothly and our eyes will be opened to learn new things.

4) March 28, Gloria will go to Xiangxiang City church which is in Xiangtan prefecture, for leadership training. 40 rural church leaders will be there. Against Heresies is her topic this time. Pray this training will benefit their service in their church.

5) Before March 11 and March 14, Gloria needs to hand in two courses' final paper prospectus. Her topic on Christian Mission History is: Did Confucian Pave the Way for Christianity in China? But she hasn't found a topic on Social Anthropology. Pray that she can finish her task well on this assignment.

6) Mr. Xiayi, Gloria's assistant, this semester will go to a university in Changsha to learn Social Work every Thursday and Friday. Pray that his learning experiences will give vision to our future social outreach work.

7) Our new campus is still on the process of going through all kinds of procedures. Pray for we can deal with details well and communicate well with all kinds of people in all kinds of government offices.

As my Google blog was closed HBI created our website to communicate to outside world: www.hbichina.com, which has English version. You may check the updates of HBI under "news and events".   I also opened a Chinese blog: http://blog.sina.com.cn/gloriawu, reporting HBI updates with more pictures, but in Chinese, but you can read it through Google translate.   Thank you for your supporting all these years! Without your heartily seving us, we can't serve God on this platform of supplying theological education for all the churches not only in Hunan province, but also in Guangxi province and Hainan province.   According to the information you need, my answer is as following:   1) The brief update on status at HBI:  * New Campus Construction will begin in this year: We are going to start the construction of our campus before June, 2011. The new campus is 20 kilometers far from the present site, and located in the ecological park in Changsha County (it will soon become a part of Changsha city in the process of Urban expansion). Attached picture shows what the new campus is like.    The new church of HBI is called "The Boat of God", and its sanctuary can hold about 5000 congregation. The cross is 92 meters high. This church will be a landmark in the community and even for the city. The whole construction will be finished within 2 years, that means, in 2013, HBI will move into this new campus. Students in campus will increase from present 100 to 200 during that time with 7 classes at the same time.   * Teachers degree gaining studies are undergoing in a very intense way: preparing for the coming challenges in the new campus, we have already sent out most of our teachers for degree study. Last year, 2 teachers began their full time study in Hong Kong Lutheran Seminary for their Theology and Old Testament doctor degree. This year, 5 teachers begin their intensive degree study-I begin my study in Biola University in their InterCulture School, first M.A. and toward doctor degree;other four teachers study in a seminary in Hong Kong. 2 young people who just graduated from China's seminary, will begin their master degree study in Hong Kong full time from this year. They will come back to HBI as teachers. 1 teacher will begin his half year study in Wuhan University on library management.   * Our goal is to form HBI as a leading seminary in China. Within 5 years, we will move from 3-year-program bible training to 4-year-program theological training (with short time training, 3 months and 1 year program at the same time); within 10 years, we will obtain the recognition of Asian Theological Association, and begin to issue our degree diploma; Within 15 years, we will have our own graduate program.   2) Prayer needs:  please pray for HBI leadership, for its stablity, for wisdom and a spirit of continue learning and humbleness. Pray for teachers who are in degree study, that they can integrate the knowledge with actual church needs and situation. Pray for our relationships with departments of government, that it can continue developing in mutual trust.   3) On Luke 8:4-15: From HBI as an educator: Jesus is using an agricultural phenomenon in this parable, this reminds me the process of making someone a productive person who can produce hundred times of fruit, is a long process. Just as work in the fields to plant crops, from seeds to harvest, it costs a lot of time, patience, diligence, as well as faith and hope. Students in HBI, listened maybe too much preaching, received maybe too much seeds, but what will help in their future's productive serve in the church before God? We, as educators need to cultivate good soil in their heart. This soil consists of honest and kindness, which are all characters.  So spiritual formation and character building should always be the essential for a good theological training. Can our courses, activities, assignments-all the things happenin campus, help students resist the evil one, well prepared for persecution, discerning the worldly things and living a simple but abundant life, as well as help them mold honest and kindness, mercifulness into their hearts?   From Chinese church: to be oneness is a clear teaching from Jesus to His disciples. In China, we still can't see oneness between house churches and public churches. One famous Beijing house church, they are willing to be obedient to the government, but just would not enter into so called "three self" public church system. This makes me think what are the things in believers' hearts, hindering the oneness of churches in China? Cell Church: Reformation or Church growth?

Is cell church more of a reformation or church growth strategy in western nations, like North America? I'm growing in my conviction that it is a reformation strategy, at least in North America.  The Triune God is challenging our individualism through cell ministry.

Scripture, not culture, must dictate how we live and behave. God loves community and desires His church to live in love and unity. Cells promote this.

My thinking is radically shifting from the question, "How can we make cell church work in North America?"  to  "How can we obey Scripture that tells us to live in community?"  There's a huge difference between the two convictions. One is based on pragmatism, the other on Scripture. 

North American is a nation of rugged individualists that glories in the lone ranger and the person who picks himself up by the bootstraps.

Yet, God is not an individualist. He is a God who lives in perfect unity with the other members of the Trinity: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.  Jesus demonstrated that unity while on earth, never doing anything that wasn't perfectly pleasing to the Father and Spirit (John 5:19-30). He then told His disciples to walk in that same unity, saying that their best witness to an unbelieving world would be the love they showed one to another (John 17: 6-19).

The early church was born in the upper room of a house while the disciples were in one-accord (Acts 1:13). After the Spirit descended, the disciples broke bread from house to house and came together to hear the apostle's teaching (Acts 2:42-46).

Unity, oneness, and the one-anothers. This is the focus of the New Testament. Yet, this emphasis goes against the grain of individualism, which says,  "I want to do it my way, and I demand my rights." 

Individualists often drift from church to church and prefer anonymity, rather than accountability and commitment. Cell ministry asks people to come together in a group setting, share transparently, live and deal with conflict, love one another, and then to reach out to a world without Jesus.

I believe individualistic cultures need cell ministry more than group-oriented cultures (e.g., Latin America, Asia, etc.), but it does take harder work to make it happen in the western world.  

All that I've written here is expounded in my book, The Relational Disciple (check out this youtube video; I'm excitedly talking about the contents of the book, and you can see it in my hands). Jon Hamilton, who  has read most of my books, said to me, "Joel, The Relational Disciple is your most important book."  I agree. I'm selling this book for 50% off the cover price for these next two weeks because I believe its theme is critical.

Hotpot er mye godt som kokes i en boblende gryte midt på bordet godt for den "kalde" årstid. " hotpotten på "Den lille fete sauen" restauranten er spesiell god.

Prayer list from Gloria for January, 2011

1.         Gloria's study in Qiang Mai: From January 3-14, Gloria will be in Qiang Main of Thailand, study Christian Mission History and Social Anthropology. Requirement of reading 7 books and seminar class with a lot of discussions, conducted all in English---quite heavy and crazy task for Gloria. Please pray that she can overcome all the difficulties and get "A" in both courses. (Mater students are required to get "A")

2.         Students' winter holidays： All the students of HBI will go back hometown for winter holidays. They will also serve in their hometown local churches. Pray they have good rest and warm reunion with their family members and church members.

3.         HBI winter camp: HBI will have winter camp for 5 days. A church in Singapore will bring their worship team to train our students how to be better worship leaders, as well as train students to play keyboard or guitar better.

4.         Fundraising for new campus: Rev. Chenzhi will go to Hong Kong for another fundraising trip early this month, pray for his fulfillment.

5.         Hainan retreat: Gloria may be invited by Hainan Christian Council to be as a lecturer in their church workers retreat. Pray for peace trip and fruitful teaching.

6.         Time management concept in seminary and church: Time Steward, a notebook as a time management tool invented by Gloria has been printed out 300 and sent out to each of the presidents and deans of all the 18 seminaries in China. Pray this little tool can really help improve their administrative work efficiency. All the students of HBI and 144 church leaders and workers will also use this tool.

7.         New course teaching preparation: Next semester Gloria will teach Exegesis, which is totally a new course for her. Pray for her preparation during this winter holidays.

8.         China's society: The government of China is discussing the possibility of put every county under the direct administration of provincial government, which means, city government will lose their control over counties, while provincial government will carry a much heavier administrative task on. In Hunan, counties are over 120, cities only have about 20. Pray for wisdom and guidance from God to our government on this social reformation.

For first year students: the Gospel of John, the Book of Acts, Exegesis, Basic Music, Advanced Chinese, Team Building Trainings.

For second year students: Christian Education, Christian Ethics, Reformation History, Development Phscology, the books of Corinthians and Chinese Society.

For third year students: Thesis Writing, Leadership Training, Religious Laws and rules, the Book of Revelation, Church Management.

 

Selective courses for all the students:

the Book of Ephesians, the History Books of the Old Testament, New Concept English, Countryside Church Ministries, Choir Conduct, Computer and Piano.

2.        Computer Training for RAB officials: It is delayed to December 6-9.

3.        Prefecture Training: Rev. Chen finished his teaching in Yiyang and Changde with God’s grace, while I need to delay my training to Changde to Dec.11, to attend their graduation ceremony, giving students greetings and gifts.

4.        Printing of Mini-Bible College Book 4: Praise the Lord we finished preparing all the materials needed by the end of November.

5.        Worship exchange: Praise the Lord the exchange went very well. I am so proud of our students!

 

 

Prayer List for December 2010

from Gloria Wu, Hunan Bible Institute

 

1.         December 1, on the afternoon, all the students of HBI will go to streets and send out Red Ribbon to people, in this way to remind the society of the thread of AIDS. We also made a card with HBI’s name on it to spread some knowledge about preventing AIDS.

2.         I will preach on December 5 and conduct Communion in the morning.

3.         RAB guys computer training will happen in December 6-9 in our school’s computer room, around 40 people Mr. Lee, my husband will teach them how to make ppt. They also invite another trainer from a computer company to give training on internet safety.

4.         December 13-15, pastors and main coworkers in Xiangtan City of Hunan will have a retreat. I invited a couple from Chengdu City of Sichuan province to give them training on how to release pressure. I also will give them a lecture for one of the afternoons. A coworker in the church of that area committed suicide 3 monthes ago.

5.         Taiwan Lutheran Church will have a group of people come on December 6 and give cell group and worship training the following 4 days both in our school and in Zhuzhou City church of Hunan.

6.         On December 19, my parents will be baptized together in our school’s church. This is after 15 years I baptized. They are now in our church’s Preparing Class.

7.         I need to finish 5 courses that I teach this semester within this month, to have the students have final examinations, and then I could go to Thailand for Mission studies on January 1 next year.

8.         December 24, at Christmas Eve our school will have a party like every year. We will have a many programs and give a short sermon and call unbelivers to come up to receive the new born life of Jesus Christ in their heart.

9.         “Your Joy Might Be Full”, a little brochure with my testimony and the Gospel of John will be printed 50,000 and distributed to the churches in Hunan in Christmas season to be as a gift for the new comers to the church.

10.     Rev. Chenzhi will go to Hong Kong this month to meet some Christian leaders to do fundraising for our new campus. The goal of our fundraising is 10,000,000 Yuan.

11.     HBI New campus construction will be opened as soon as possible, not late than next spring. All the procedures are on process and so far go smoothly. The church’s design has been confirmed (refer to the pictures in the attachment).

12.     January 8th next year, this semester will end, so this month students will be busy in preparing for their final examinations.

13.     Time Steward, HBI is going to print a kind of time management notebook to help all the staff and students form good habits of managing and spending time. It will be used from next year on.

Dødsleie

Fredag morgen 12/11 2010 - ca kl 09:30 døde kona til min venn. Han er med i vår menighet.
Mannen og de to sønnene, de fleste av hennes slektninger samt jeg som prest var der da hun gikk bort.

Hun hadde vært syk i ca 2 år med lungekreft som spredde seg. Kreftsykdommen hadde kommet tilbake etter at hun for ca syv år siden hadde blitt behandlet og friskmeldt fra tidligere kreftangrep.

I august i år ble kona døpt. Jeg har aldri sett en så stor forandring i et menneske.
Fra dypt ulykkelig før dåpen til glad og førnøyd etterpå selv om hun fremdeles var like syk.

På en måte representerer denne kvinnen både årets lavpunkt og høydepunkt for meg. Bortgangen representerer en befrielse til noe jeg har fått nåde til å tro er noe mye mye bedre.

Mennesker du kjenner som dør i 40 års aldrene etterlater et tomrom og mange spørsmål i hjertene våre. Hvorfor skjer slikt? Hvorfor må en mann forsette livet alene og to sønner være uten mor midt i tenåringsalderen?

Hvorfor må et menneske langsomt tynes i 2 år før det får lov eller kan forlate denne verden? Jeg har selvsagt ikke noe svar. Bare en tanke: "Hvis noen av de jeg kjenner går bort plutselig ved akutt sykdom eller ved en ulykke - skal jeg ikke klage over det." I hvert fall ikke om de er kristne.

Langsom bortgang er værre - i hvert fall for den som går bort.

Samtidig var sykeleiet det som gjorde at denne kvinnen fikk sjansen til å ta i mot Jesus som sin frelser.

Fredag er det begravelse. Deretter venter alle utfordringene for min venn og hans to sønner i de livene de må forsette å leve. Dere kan være med å be for de.
